Episode 05: Cosmetologist Secrets, Mom Fails, Real Estate Wins & TV Shows
[00:00:00] Gloria Watson: Welcome back everybody.
[00:00:01] Marisa Barrett: Real quick. Where do we look? 'cause I did notice in that last one I was looking like kind of, so I look here. Oh, I've been looking up here. The one that's recording? Yes. And then I noticed it and I was like, why do I look cross? You're looking at you
[00:00:18] Gloria Watson: at yourself in the I'm like, do I look alright?
[00:00:21] Gloria Watson: Okay. Right here. This is our friend. Yeah. Okay. Welcome back everybody. This is Gloria and Marissa, and we're right here back again with working moms in real estate. So today we have a treat for you. I think we mentioned before that Marissa was actually a cosmetologist in her past life. Mm-hmm. You know, but because those super important lessons never really go away.
[00:00:45] Gloria Watson: No. And you're the most polished out of the two of us. I think we are gonna have you as our guest for today, because we're gonna have. Our Beauty Edition episode, and we're gonna just ask you a [00:01:00] bunch of questions. And when I say we, I mean me, I'm gonna ask the question as in we, it'll be
[00:01:03] Marisa Barrett: me. And if you wanna chime in and
[00:01:05] Gloria Watson: ask yourself a
[00:01:06] Marisa Barrett: question, go ahead.
[00:01:07] Gloria Watson: If you find anything of importance that you think is relevant, you should tell us. Okay. Um, so we did hear a little bit about your story mm-hmm. How you got into that. But tell me, Marissa, since you know you are a guest, tell us a little bit about your, um. Cosmetology career. What did that look like and what you weren't in it for?
[00:01:28] Gloria Watson: You said 20 years. Forever. Forever. So you must've loved something about it, right? Mm-hmm. I did. Tell us
[00:01:34] Marisa Barrett: a little bit about it. So I wanted to be a hairstylist since I was a little girl, like at least five years old. I was cutting all my Barbies, hair dolls, giving 'em good haircuts, good. And then I gave myself several bang cuts.
[00:01:52] Marisa Barrett: And I used to crimp my hair. I mean, I loved doing hair since I was a kid. So when I, one day I was like in high [00:02:00] school and I was like, oh, you can actually do that and get paid. And so I went to cosmetology school and loved it. Like I loved hair and I did it for 21 years. And the only reason that I stopped doing it is because my shoulders couldn't take it anymore.
[00:02:16] Marisa Barrett: But yeah, I loved it. And what more like, do you want me just to keep. Spilling every bean I have, 'cause there's a lot of beans in this bag. I want to hear some beans that
[00:02:27] Gloria Watson: are the cosmetology bag. So I think I mentioned it. I went to cosmetology in 2003. Mine was a very shortlived, cosmetology career. I was like six months and I went through a divorce.
[00:02:39] Gloria Watson: So it was a really difficult time and it was just not the right time for me to be doing that. But, uh. Yeah, I didn't like it as much as you and it could also been that I wasn't as good as you. So you know it was, that was why. That was why you just thought like, I'm glad a lot people each other,
[00:02:58] Marisa Barrett: I wanna do hair, it looks [00:03:00] fun, or this will be easy, or maybe I'll make a lot of money.
[00:03:02] Marisa Barrett: But the truth of the matter is with anything that you do in life, if your heart's not in it, you're not gonna be successful. And it's hard. It is. And and you do. To make good money doing hair, you gotta work your butt off. Yeah. Hence to why my shoulders blew out because I was. Right. Working like a dog, but I loved it.
[00:03:20] Marisa Barrett: And you're on your feet all day. Mm-hmm. Right?
[00:03:23] Gloria Watson: Yeah.
[00:03:23] Marisa Barrett: Yeah. And when I first started, I was out there wearing the highest heels, skinny toed, stiletto heels. And you like adorable. I would like barely be able to walk out the door. And I'm like, at the end of the day now I have back pain, shoulder pain. But at least I looked cute.
[00:03:42] Marisa Barrett: You look cute.
[00:03:43] Gloria Watson: Well, I think we need some pictures though. We're gonna put up some pictures for this. Oh my gosh, I should
[00:03:48] Marisa Barrett: seriously, because I've had every, just the other day actually, I was going through albums and I was like, dang, I've had every color and cut under the sun. [00:04:00] And most of them were really terrible.
[00:04:02] Marisa Barrett: Were they really? Yes. Or is it just
[00:04:04] Gloria Watson: your you're thinking? No, they were. Yeah. But think about it. Even you say you've had every color and hairstyle. That's because it was probably in at the time. Just because it doesn't fit our standards right now doesn't necessarily mean that it was bad at that time.
[00:04:18] Gloria Watson: Right. But
[00:04:18] Marisa Barrett: you look back at it and you're like, I would never do that again. Yeah, but
[00:04:22] Gloria Watson: that's because you're your age now and you know, so yeah, we do need some of those pictures. Yeah. I'll, because I think that'll be great. I mean, who better to go through all kinds of different styles? Than a cosmetologist, right?
[00:04:37] Gloria Watson: Yeah. Oh, for sure. Yeah.
[00:04:39] Marisa Barrett: Like I would cut someone's hair and I'm like, I really like that. I should try it. But that's not really the way it works because what looks cute on you might not look good on me. And I had to learn that many times. Hey, at least you learned it on yourself. Oh, I'm sure a lot of clients learned it too, like crying in the car.
[00:04:57] Marisa Barrett: Like, why did I let her cut my hair? [00:05:00] Because if you came to me with hair down here and you wanted this, I was like, yes. And clip. You had no time to think about it. Like the hair was gone
[00:05:08] Gloria Watson: and that was it. So you were done. Well, I made people cry, but not because of that. I bet you did. I cussed my brother's here off.
[00:05:14] Gloria Watson: Oh, I've done that. Mm-hmm. I cut this girl whose hair came down to here and she. She wanted, I don't even remember what she wanted, but it was not this, it just was not very good. That's what happens when you pay $5 for a haircut. That wasn't cosmetology school.
[00:05:32] Marisa Barrett: I think this looks good. No
[00:05:33] Gloria Watson: it didn't. No, I didn't.
[00:05:34] Gloria Watson: I never thought that it was just like one after the other. After the other. Mm-hmm. Um, so what was your favorite part about it?
[00:05:44] Marisa Barrett: I think like what my favorite part was is when someone does come in and they look terrible and their hair is out of control. 'cause like I'm also the type that's your favorite part still to this day.
[00:05:55] Marisa Barrett: Like at the store. Like, Ooh, that's a bad cut. Oh, that's a bad color. And [00:06:00] so sorry. But it's true. She, every time I come
[00:06:02] Gloria Watson: in she probably looks out. Do you? Oh, I do. I'm always
[00:06:04] Marisa Barrett: like, let me, yeah. Like it is right now. But then when you. Make someone feel beautiful at the end and they're like loving their hair and they're like, no one can do this but you.
[00:06:16] Marisa Barrett: Then you're like, that's what it's about. And then building the relationships like my clients that I had, I had from the start till I moved here and I cried so hard leaving them because I loved them Tho those. Like relationships are so special. You see them get married, have babies, have grand babies, some get sick, some pass away.
[00:06:41] Marisa Barrett: Like you go through life with them and you are invested in their life fully for years.
[00:06:46] Gloria Watson: That was, that's true. I never thought about that. Mm-hmm. That I can see how you would be completely part of their life and you know, in the long term way.
[00:06:55] Marisa Barrett: Yep. I loved it and I think I loved too. Like I have a good [00:07:00] memory so I would see you and wouldn't see you for six months.
[00:07:02] Marisa Barrett: And then I'm like, Hey Gloria, how's Gianna? And you're like, did you write that down? And I'm like, no. I just remember 'cause I would remember details about people's lives and they were like shocked. '
[00:07:11] Gloria Watson: cause that is amazing. I still get people's names, wrong names I'm not
[00:07:16] Marisa Barrett: good at until I really know you. But details and faces, I'll remember.
[00:07:21] Gloria Watson: So there you go. Mm-hmm. That's the key to good business. And it, it is actually very true. It is. And that is the key to good business in almost any kind of business. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So if we were gonna get into this beauty issue mm-hmm. This beauty, uh, segment. I think the biggest thing, you know, you have as a woman, at least for me, I think we touched base this a little bit as she started getting older.
[00:07:46] Gloria Watson: Not that we're, you know, I'm like, who are we talking about? But as she started getting older, a lot of people talk about this whole stereotype of, you know, should you have short hair? Should you have long hair? Should you have light hair? Should you, should [00:08:00] you go lighter? Because now you're starting to get some grays.
[00:08:02] Gloria Watson: Mm-hmm. What is the truth to that? Like what is it in your experience? Mm-hmm. That.
[00:08:10] Marisa Barrett: I think that it's truly about what the individual looks like. Like you have to take into account skin tone, eye color, face shape. It's really not about age, because I've seen some ladies who are probably in their eighties with gray white hair to hair, and they, it's healthy, thick, and they have a nice bun or they, and then you see a 20-year-old that has wispy fried hair.
[00:08:35] Marisa Barrett: So it's really. About each individual and what they were blessed with. Yeah. And, and then in addition to that, I've heard both. I've heard if you keep your hair dark as you age, you look older. But then I've heard that it actually makes you look youthful. So I feel like it does go back to like every individual is different.
[00:08:54] Marisa Barrett: Yeah.
[00:08:54] Gloria Watson: Mm-hmm. So do me.
[00:08:58] Marisa Barrett: I think you look great. I think [00:09:00] that your dark hair is very like youthful on you. I don't think it looks aging, it looks natural. And then I love you with the long hair. I've seen it a little bit shorter and you look cute like that. One thing I would never do again is that awful, like wedged.
[00:09:14] Marisa Barrett: Just, uh, pixie cut plc. Cut that you,
[00:09:19] Gloria Watson: um, it was a mistake and it was not. My mistake was cut. We need a photo of that too. If I'm
[00:09:25] Marisa Barrett: gonna divulge my photos. We need a photo of that. Okay. Now that one? No, I think you look
[00:09:30] Gloria Watson: so you appropriate. More, better than like, 'cause I did wanna go back to mm-hmm.
[00:09:36] Marisa Barrett: It just
[00:09:37] Gloria Watson: feel like it looks more professional.
[00:09:38] Gloria Watson: Mm-hmm. You know, more. Uh, yeah. Age appropriate.
[00:09:42] Marisa Barrett: Even that, like, I think that long hair can look professional as long as you are trimming it and you're combing it like anyone's hair comb it. Anyone's hair can look terrible if they're not grooming it every day. Like true. You know? So I brush your hair, guys.
[00:09:58] Marisa Barrett: Yes. Comb your [00:10:00] hair and get trims.
[00:10:01] Gloria Watson: How often should people wash their hair?
[00:10:05] Marisa Barrett: That also is individual because like, you know, the, the whole point of not shampooing your hair is to save it from the heat damage. Right. And people don't understand that. Like I had clients who weren't shampooing their hair, but they were still getting it wet and using hot tools every day.
[00:10:22] Marisa Barrett: Well, that defeats the purpose, the point of not washing your hair. Is actually to keep hot tools off of it. So if you shampoo today and style it today, then you get to use that hairstyle for a couple of days without putting more heat, more product, and then stripping all your natural oils out of the hair with shampoo.
[00:10:42] Marisa Barrett: Um, also when you do not wash your hair, you've got to brush it because your oil that your body produces mm-hmm. Is actually the best conditioner for your hair. So if you're not there, you go. Brushing it all the way to the end. I never do. To condition your hair, oh, your scalp is more [00:11:00] important than this.
[00:11:01] Marisa Barrett: You have to like, uh, keep your scalp invigorated. It gets rid of dead skin oils, keeps the follicles open so you have healthy new growth. If you, your scalp, you can have a buildup of oil and it's just sitting there. That's not healthy.
[00:11:19] Gloria Watson: So would you say that that's a big problem for men that are, that are balding?
[00:11:23] Gloria Watson: Like they neglect some of that. No, seriously. So seriously. We actually, my husband and I, were just having this conversation because my husband has no hair, you know? And that is one of the things that we were, and I remember some of that learning that because men don't necessarily take, you know, it's not that they don't wash.
[00:11:42] Gloria Watson: My husband takes a shower twice a day, but it's, you know, with the hats and all that stuff that you just, they don't. Pay as much attention to their hair as we do.
[00:11:52] Marisa Barrett: Well I think like men who are losing their hair, you still need to like clean your scalp 'cause it's part of your body. Absolutely. Yeah. So, and I would probably [00:12:00] not use conditioner, but some sort of like oil, like a jojoba oil, which is the closest oil to what our skin produces.
[00:12:06] Marisa Barrett: Maybe do that once a day or every other day. You know how, how about oil to keep your scalp? Uh, hydrated. You know what I mean? Yeah. 'cause you still don't want like a dry, flaky
[00:12:16] Gloria Watson: scalp. Well, and it thins out. Mm-hmm. Right? Mm-hmm. So that's really informative. I did not know that about, um, anything. Yeah, about anything.
[00:12:28] Gloria Watson: Um, so that's really great information. What was I gonna ask? Along with that, tell us a little, what's your favorite dry hair shampoo? I know you're a believer in dry shampoo.
[00:12:39] Marisa Barrett: Yeah. Um, I have Redken. It's a great dry shampoo. They do make some that are colored and I don't really like that 'cause it's so dark that it like, you know, I'd rather have the white.
[00:12:51] Marisa Barrett: And then the key with that is spray it all over. Let it sit for a second and then brush it through. Yeah, it breaks it up and goes all the way through the [00:13:00] ends, but. Really you don't need that the next day unless you are very oil, produce a lot of oil, but like you don't need to be. There are some women who will like take the dry shampoo to a whole other level and they're going once a week for a shampoo, and then the rest of the time they're caked in With dry shampoo, you're damaging your hair.
[00:13:19] Marisa Barrett: It's not good. It's like spraying chalk into your hair. Like that's, these are my opinions too. Just FYI. So you don't can take it from my licensed cosmetologist. It is truly my personal opinion. So, yeah. But
[00:13:34] Gloria Watson: you probably, you've seen this and you've dealt with this, you know, maybe not today, but you have, and you know, for very long time, so I probably trust your word over mine or probably anybody that has never done anything like what you've done in the past.
[00:13:49] Gloria Watson: Yeah. So, um. So you use the Redken? I actually, uh, have used Redken. My, the brand that I normally use is Kenra.
[00:13:58] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm. Yep.
[00:13:59] Gloria Watson: And I really [00:14:00] like it.
[00:14:00] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm.
[00:14:00] Gloria Watson: But for some reason I've used a lot of different really expensive dry hair shampoos and they don't work as well. Mm-hmm. It seems like, I don't know what it is.
[00:14:10] Gloria Watson: Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but ironically, one that I've used that works a lot better is, um. I think it's clean freak.
[00:14:19] Marisa Barrett: I've never heard of it.
[00:14:20] Gloria Watson: It's um, I am probably wrong, but it's a dry shampoo. They sell it at Walmart and it's probably the one that's worth the best for me. Mm-hmm. Um, yeah, I, it is very inexpensive.
[00:14:33] Gloria Watson: Like it's probably half the price of the really nice ones, but. I haven't tried Redken so
[00:14:39] Marisa Barrett: well. The thing is too, you know, sometimes people think that like the cost of a product is more valuable than what's actually in the product, and I found it with so many clients. I had clients that had beautiful, healthy hair that use over the counter UA or.
[00:14:57] Marisa Barrett: Whatever brand and their hair was amazing. Why would I [00:15:00] be like, you need this a hundred dollars bottle of shampoo and your hair looks and feels great. No, no. But then there are people like myself, I can't get away with using Yeah. Inexpensive hair product. I have to use really good stuff. Otherwise, my hair is like a cotton ball, but So like that dry shampoo.
[00:15:17] Marisa Barrett: Yeah. Even though it may be inexpensive and from Walmart, I'm sure it's a great product and it is. Whatever fits your hair. 'cause all of us. Yeah. Have some, we're all so different. Like what works for me may not work for you and vice versa. So, exactly. I'm sure your dry shampoo's amazing. It's amazing. Once she knows the real name of it, if it's clean freak or Dry Creek or whatever, think it it.
[00:15:39] Gloria Watson: I just, we're gonna start, so we're gonna put all the links of all of our products that we mm-hmm. Are that we use. So you guys have an idea what they are. Um, as you know, we haven't been doing this very long. This is our fifth podcast. High five. High five
[00:15:55] Marisa Barrett: for the five five.
[00:15:57] Gloria Watson: So, um, we are, [00:16:00] as we're going, we're learning more and more, we're going to get it together.
[00:16:02] Gloria Watson: Actually, we have our website.
[00:16:04] Marisa Barrett: Yeah,
[00:16:04] Gloria Watson: yeah.
[00:16:05] Marisa Barrett: What is it called? Working moms in real estate website. Oh, okay. She has to school me on everything.
[00:16:12] Gloria Watson: Well, that,
[00:16:14] Marisa Barrett: that's, no, well, it's true actually.
[00:16:17] Gloria Watson: Um, well. What, do you have a beauty hack that you wanna share with us today? Like an actual beauty product? So I think all the information is great. Mm-hmm. I love all the hairstylist information because it is such a big aspect mm-hmm. Of our, of who we are. Mm-hmm. Right? Like when you show up somewhere, that's one of the first things people see.
[00:16:39] Gloria Watson: So it's super important.
[00:16:40] Marisa Barrett: I think like since we're talking about hair, like a beauty hack hair thing or product. Yeah, product would be. It is your products you use and it's also the hot tools you use. Mm-hmm. Like if I go to a hotel and use a hotel blow dryer, my hair is poof, but I use [00:17:00] now a bio ionic hair dryer that my hair is smoother and it, and using a nozzle on your hair dryer is also.
[00:17:07] Marisa Barrett: Humongous. Like really? People throw those in the drawer and then the, the nozzles blowing your hair all over. That's what I do. Those nozzles are there to direct heat in specific spots so you get a smoother blow dry. How long does it take for you to do your hair from start to finish? Maybe 25 minutes.
[00:17:25] Gloria Watson: That's not bad. I don't mess
[00:17:26] Marisa Barrett: around. I blow it dry like I product. How long products do you think it
[00:17:29] Gloria Watson: would take me to do? Do the way you do it?
[00:17:33] Marisa Barrett: I don't know. I mean, for me, like I, I thankfully, like I've, I've been doing hair seriously since I was five. Like hot tools, any kind of tools, braids, all of it. And so I can whip up.
[00:17:44] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm. Quick. So tell us again what your hair dryer is? Bio ionic and it's bio. Um, but. Using the nozzle, I feel like is a beauty hack. It'll cut down your blow dry time. Yeah. It'll help with frizz add shine, [00:18:00] and then if that's all you have time to do is give yourself a good blowout, like with even a paddle brush.
[00:18:06] Marisa Barrett: Yeah. Then
[00:18:07] Gloria Watson: I, I take a shower at night and I dry my hair.
[00:18:11] Marisa Barrett: Swollen
[00:18:12] Gloria Watson: naturally. But I do sometimes find that if I get up and I do a roller anyway for a very quick dry, it still helps.
[00:18:19] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm. Yeah, I agree. It kind of like lifts it off your scalp and kind of infuses it a little bit and it
[00:18:25] Gloria Watson: come sit, calms it down.
[00:18:27] Gloria Watson: Mm-hmm. But that's, we're gonna have that, I'm gonna have to try it. Mm-hmm. Yeah,
[00:18:35] Gloria Watson: that'll be cutting that out. Okay. So. Back. You know what? We didn't do our real estate moment, our real estate minute. We didn't. We didn't. So will you
[00:18:45] Marisa Barrett: be able to cut that in that what you do? No. We'll just
[00:18:47] Gloria Watson: do it. We'll do, do it now. It's not a big deal.
[00:18:50] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm.
[00:18:50] Gloria Watson: So I think for a real estate minute or real estate segment, the one thing that I wanted to talk about was.
[00:18:59] Gloria Watson: A [00:19:00] new study came out again, like, you know how they do these studies all the time and they were saying that real estate is still, 37% of investors still are investing in real estate as opposed to I think is 24% invest in gold. So it's always seems like the two biggest competitors for long term investing is either real estate or gold, and they just hold their value.
[00:19:25] Gloria Watson: Like in a stronger way than even a stock. I think the way that real estate competes with the stock is not so much the value of it, because you could lose your stocks tomorrow. Mm-hmm. And while a house may lose its value, you're never gonna actually lose a house unless you sell it when it's at its lowest price.
[00:19:41] Gloria Watson: Right. So if you have a piece of property and you put it, even if it drops, the value decreases by half. You can rent it and still make money on that investment. Where gold, it always just kind of tends to hold its value in general.
[00:19:56] Gloria Watson: With a stock, you are letting other people play with your [00:20:00] investment because as everybody panics and they pull money Yeah. Your investment continues to drop. Mm-hmm.
[00:20:05] Gloria Watson: The housing market is the same, but you could still make money while that investment perhaps has dropped to a low price. Mm-hmm. And you just hold onto it until, mm-hmm. It gains its appreciation again. Mm-hmm. So for that reason, um, I think it was, um, bank rate or someone, they were just stating again that real estate is still one of the strongest investments even right now where we are with the market and the inflation and everything that's happening.
[00:20:32] Gloria Watson: So if you're still in the middle of trying to decide which is best for you, my husband's a big believer in stocks. I'm a big believer in real estate, so we fight about it all the time. And now he is kind of leaning towards the set of real estate, but the reality is people are going to lean towards whatever they understand.
[00:20:49] Gloria Watson: Yep. Right. So I, I have friends that are financial advisors and I have friends that do like whole life and everything. And what I find is [00:21:00] that the more that you know about something, that's what you're gonna lean with. Mm-hmm. Whether you realize it or not, you are gonna feel like you're more towards that investment just because you lack knowledge and other things.
[00:21:11] Gloria Watson: Yeah. So if you are trying to invest, get really educated in the multiple different aspects because I think that's going to give you the best edge in figuring out whether you do wanna invest in real estate. Mm-hmm. Or if you wanna be hands off and put your money in a stock. It, as long as you're willing to be committed in a stays there long term, it does ebb and flow.
[00:21:33] Gloria Watson: Mm-hmm. But at the same time. If you are okay without that money right now, it will come back eventually. Yep. You know, now if you're talking about gold is just one of those things that you can't eat it. You can't hold onto it, you have to convert it. I'm not a big fan of gold, but that's just because I don't know any and I don't know anything about it.
[00:21:53] Gloria Watson: And so again, real estate is my expertise, so I'm gonna be biased towards that. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And that's our real estate minute. [00:22:00] People still prefer real estate over gold. Yes.
[00:22:05] Gloria Watson: Winning # winning. What's going on with the builder life? Like what is happening? Are you seeing any movement as price, as far as prices? Are you seeing like people, more people come in or less people?
[00:22:19] Marisa Barrett: Well, I think that where I sell is a unique situation, but I think all in all, we're still moving product.
[00:22:27] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm. And we're still seeing people buying new construction. And I think the reason is is because we have lowered our prices. Builders are offering so many great incentives. For, you know, rates, appliance packages, realtor commission, just trying to get people out here. Yeah. So, yeah, I feel like we're still moving a lot of homes and I feel like the spring and now that summertime is coming, people also are interested.
[00:22:56] Marisa Barrett: They wanna get moved over the summer, get settled [00:23:00] before their kids have to go back to school. School. So I've definitely seen an uptick in Yeah. People coming out and purchasing homes, which has been great.
[00:23:09] Gloria Watson: Good. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I, I'm seeing more movement as well. Mm-hmm. Um, but it's still not like it has been in the past years.
[00:23:20] Gloria Watson: Definitely. We're still definitely seeing a slower year compared to the past, I guess. Mm-hmm. That's all we have to compare it to. Yep. Um. What was your best mom win? Mom failed this this week.
[00:23:35] Marisa Barrett: Um, let's see. I think that, I'm not sure if I really failed this week yet. I'm not gone. Wood winning at
[00:23:46] Gloria Watson: winning
[00:23:47] Marisa Barrett: again, but I won because we went on another college visit.
[00:23:51] Marisa Barrett: You did? Mm-hmm. Yeah. And did you love it or did it make you sad? Both. I was crying. I was, because, mostly because I feel [00:24:00] like God moved so swiftly as he does. Like it's, it reminds me of like when we make plans and then God intervenes. Yeah. And like the most unexpected ways. Unexpected timing and blows her socks off.
[00:24:17] Marisa Barrett: And I'm like, I love that. And so that is what happened. But me and my mom and my oldest went on a college visit. And just being there and seeing your kid so happy and like rewarded for his hard work and seeing him about to grow into a man is like, yeah, I mean I've been, that's so awesome. Like my heart like pulls, and then the other one was the other two boys.
[00:24:41] Marisa Barrett: Made me proud while I was gone. They kept the house clean, they fed the dog, she had water. She's all alive. They're just like, they're all growing up and they're becoming like the most amazing little men. And like to witness that, it feels like a win. 'cause it's like you. Hope that you're raising your kids [00:25:00] right, and I really feel so blessed that my kids are so good.
[00:25:03] Marisa Barrett: So I don't think I've failed this week yet. It's only Thursday.
[00:25:09] Gloria Watson: I got your, I got the invitation for, uh, one, not invitation, his graduation card announcement. Are you doing a graduation party? We are, but like
[00:25:18] Marisa Barrett: just a small one at So you're
[00:25:20] Gloria Watson: not inviting?
[00:25:22] Marisa Barrett: I had to tell 'cause people are like, what are you? Like, are you guys?
[00:25:25] Marisa Barrett: And I'm like, no. Be only because like the, like he graduates at one o'clock and then it's like, I don't know how long it's gonna be and I work and then we're going out of town like. My schedule is different. To be fair, I didn't invite anybody
[00:25:38] Gloria Watson: to my wedding. Yeah, her actual, but
[00:25:40] Marisa Barrett: I did get invited. So you wanna come to the dinner?
[00:25:43] Marisa Barrett: The graduation dinner. But we're just, I have, can't bring my whole family Yes. And, and his groomsmen. But we're just having a small dinner out to eat. But my family's coming in, my sisters are, are coming in. That's awesome. And my best friend, I'm so sorry, but [00:26:00] she is. Coming in. She is my best friend. I don't know
[00:26:03] Gloria Watson: unless we meet.
[00:26:03] Gloria Watson: We might be best friends.
[00:26:05] Marisa Barrett: You might. And then you guys will kick me by. Hi Marissa. See ya. No more podcasts for, but I, what is her name? Anita.
[00:26:13] Gloria Watson: Gloria. And Anita. Well, and
[00:26:14] Marisa Barrett: if anyone else is watching, like I have many best friends, so don't get your feelings hurt. I put friends with.
[00:26:23] Gloria Watson: Um, air quotes.
[00:26:24] Marisa Barrett: Yeah, I'm gonna, like, I got a lot of friends in here and in my heart and so don't have your feelings hurt.
[00:26:30] Marisa Barrett: 'cause like you're all in there. I, everyone
[00:26:32] Gloria Watson: that is the joke. That is why I keep saying Marissa's my best friend.
[00:26:36] Marisa Barrett: Well, we were, we were talking and I don't think we've talked about it on here before, but like. When you're in middle school and some of my friendships are from them. Yeah. You are like declaring like we are best friends.
[00:26:46] Marisa Barrett: Yeah. We were not in middle school together. Together we're wearing matching outfits like we, you and I. And then as you get older, you do have so many amazing friends Yeah. That are considered best friends, but we don't, like, I kind, you hear me like my best [00:27:00] friend, this my best friend now like I do. But I really should get in the habit of like, 'cause I am a mature lady, you're and I shouldn't quit using middle school terms, so I'll try.
[00:27:10] Marisa Barrett: It's
[00:27:10] Gloria Watson: okay.
[00:27:11] Marisa Barrett: You can use my school
[00:27:12] Gloria Watson: terms.
[00:27:12] Marisa Barrett: It's
[00:27:13] Gloria Watson: fine.
[00:27:14] Marisa Barrett: Who knows what they even call it these days, you know? Yeah. I
[00:27:20] Gloria Watson: don't even
[00:27:20] Marisa Barrett: know.
[00:27:21] Gloria Watson: I don't even know. I think it's GI used to love Gianna and all the girls, but Gianna, she didn't have sisters. Living at home like her age. So everybody she met, she's like, mama. I just met my new best friend.
[00:27:35] Gloria Watson: Everybody was her best friend. Great. That's a new one. That is. It was
[00:27:39] Marisa Barrett: great. Me and Gianna will be best friends.
[00:27:41] Gloria Watson: Oh really? Um, what else?
[00:27:45] Marisa Barrett: Um, what about your, we can cut, mom would fail, anything like that?
[00:27:53] Gloria Watson: Oh, so maybe you
[00:27:54] Marisa Barrett: double booking. You've got, like you were just saying, the new bonus done. I did. And Gianna have an event on the same day.
[00:27:59] Marisa Barrett: How are [00:28:00] you gonna handle that?
[00:28:01] Gloria Watson: That's next week. And I think honestly, we are learning this whole process. So yes, having a blended family is not the easiest thing. We've really enjoyed it, but it is different. Mm-hmm. So Gianna has her, uh, award ceremony. And Ben has his end of the school year party. So we're gonna have to make a decision whether to go to one or the other, or each, you know, go see the kids.
[00:28:30] Marisa Barrett: Um, so we're gonna conquer and divide No. Is that what it's called? Yeah. divide and conquer, whatever.
[00:28:36] Gloria Watson: It's the same tip I conquer, conquering and dividing it.
[00:28:40] Marisa Barrett: Right?
[00:28:41] Gloria Watson: Losing and winning. Potato. Potato. We're
[00:28:46] Marisa Barrett: gonna agree
[00:28:46] Gloria Watson: to agree. Agree to agree. Um, so yeah, I don't know that that's one or the other.
[00:28:54] Gloria Watson: Um, yeah, I don't know. I don't think I thought the mom [00:29:00] win or so I didn't have Gianna this week. I had her this weekend for Mother's Day, and that was great. Maybe this is the win or fail you decide, but my youngest daughter, Gianna, got me a Cartman T-shirt that says, respect my Author. So I'm not sure which one that falls into.
[00:29:20] Gloria Watson: But Is she meaning that to you or, oh, she gave it to me. Respect my author. Hm. So I get to wear a Carmen t-shirt.
[00:29:29] Marisa Barrett: I don't even know who that is. What is it? South Park? Is it Claudia's de June?
[00:29:36] Gloria Watson: I wish you
[00:29:37] Marisa Barrett: never watch South Park. No.
[00:29:39] Gloria Watson: Well that's good. Sorry. I, a lot of, I didn't, I really didn't either. I mean, it was a show that came up when I was a young adult.
[00:29:46] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm.
[00:29:47] Gloria Watson: But it was, it, it is a pretty crude. I was still like, in my car seat show came out, so I didn't see it totally there. Right. Um, yeah, so the fact that she knows that. [00:30:00] It's a little scary. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Speaking of shows, uh, yeah, yeah, that's our, uh, that's our topic. Well, that is pretty much our show for the day.
[00:30:08] Gloria Watson: Marissa, thank you so much for being our guest today. It was a lot of fun to learn from you.
[00:30:13] Gloria Watson: I learned a lot more and now I know I have to wash my hair at least once a week and not How often were
[00:30:18] Marisa Barrett: you washing it before? Every three weeks.
[00:30:21] Gloria Watson: So Are you serious? Come on. I wash my hair. Oh my gosh. I wash my hair every other day. Oh, cool. But even when, when it does get oily, I don't think I actually ever brushed it.
[00:30:34] Gloria Watson: I just, oh, brush your scalp too. Put please, please brush your scalp. I did use the shot, um, powder stuff. Mm-hmm. But I only use it once and then I wash my hair. Mm-hmm. Nice. It itchy and it feels uncomfortable. Mm-hmm. I don't know how people do it for weeks at a time. So maybe we don't want the clear
[00:30:51] Marisa Barrett: dry shampoo or whatever it was called, clean cream, cream
[00:30:54] Gloria Watson: free.
[00:30:54] Gloria Watson: Yeah. No, I do, I use that, but I use it once. I use it. So if I [00:31:00] shower, shower, and the next day I do my hair and the next day is usually fine. Every once in a while I do need it, especially in the summer.
[00:31:09] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm.
[00:31:09] Gloria Watson: By the second day.
[00:31:10] Marisa Barrett: Yeah. And
[00:31:11] Gloria Watson: then I wash it. And
[00:31:12] Marisa Barrett: by the way, don't judge me on my hair. Skills off my hair today because it's like a hundred percent humidity today.
[00:31:19] Marisa Barrett: Your hair looks great and it's wasn't, so just don't sit there and be like, how does she know what she's talking about when her hair looks like that?
[00:31:28] Gloria Watson: Look at my hair. My hair looks terrible today. It's okay. I feel like it was a really long day already.
[00:31:33] Marisa Barrett: It was. We were way late and um, so that's why we probably look oily.
[00:31:45] Marisa Barrett: Done Face was like, who is she calling? Oily. It's hot in here on that note. Anyways, thank you. Join us for the topic. Yeah, join
[00:31:55] Gloria Watson: us for the topic.
[00:31:56] Marisa Barrett: Don't forget to just subscribe. Hit
[00:31:59] Gloria Watson: [00:32:00] smash. Yeah. Subscribe. Follow, watch the videos please. Yeah, yeah. Watch the rest of the videos. Send
[00:32:04] Marisa Barrett: those questions.
[00:32:05] Gloria Watson: Oh, actually, uh, next week we have our pediatric surgeon that is gonna be joining us next week.
[00:32:12] Gloria Watson: Perfect. So, and she'll be here to answer and tell us a little bit about, first of all, how she's a traveling doctor. Mm-hmm. So she, and I don't know that it's traveling. I think she travels 'cause she lives here. She goes to Houston every other week. Mm-hmm. But she manages, you know, to a home here and a home over there.
[00:32:30] Gloria Watson: With her kids and her and her job. So she'll be telling us a little bit about how she manages it, manages it all. Mm-hmm. But also, you know, answer some questions that we have. I'm gonna make a, a list of like ailments mm-hmm. For me and my kids. Mm-hmm. And then ask her all while we're here. Okay. And she can't say no to camera.
[00:32:52] Gloria Watson: And another thing.
[00:32:56] Gloria Watson: I love it. Exactly. So these hot flashes.
[00:32:59] Marisa Barrett: Yeah. [00:33:00] So I got very hot when it was very cold in a building. What's going on? Yeah.
[00:33:07] Gloria Watson: Okay. All right. See ya. Bye guys. Stick around for the topic, which we are talking about.
[00:33:13] Marisa Barrett: Huh? TV shows. TV shows, yeah. What, what are you watching these days?
[00:33:17] Gloria Watson: So TV shows, what are we watching these days?
[00:33:20] Marisa Barrett: Yeah. Are we talking about all TV shows? Netflix,
[00:33:24] Gloria Watson: all TV shows, like everything. So what is, right now, the show that I'm watching is The Last Of Us.
[00:33:31] Marisa Barrett: What is it?
[00:33:32] Gloria Watson: So it's about, it's a zombie show.
[00:33:35] Marisa Barrett: Mm.
[00:33:35] Gloria Watson: But it's intriguing because in this show, essentially if you watch the premise, it's about a fungus that the earth has risen a couple degrees and while the fungus cannot live on its own.
[00:33:50] Gloria Watson: Um, it has been able to grow enough to, I don't know how it gets into humans, I don't know, but it creates a zombie and it kind of controls it. Have you guys ever [00:34:00] and. You just gotta look it up. It is very good,
[00:34:04] Marisa Barrett: but I won't be watching it. I don't like any zombie shows. I don't like any scary shows.
[00:34:09] Gloria Watson: I don't like scary shows.
[00:34:10] Gloria Watson: But this isn't like scary. This is a thriller, so it's not like zombie back from the dead. It's like a zombie because they're infected with this fungus that is in their brain.
[00:34:21] Marisa Barrett: I'm still not gonna watch it.
[00:34:25] Gloria Watson: What show are you watching?
[00:34:27] Marisa Barrett: I honestly, I don't watch a ton of TV because I don't have time, but I do, I'm unfortunately like a Bravo junkie, so I watch a lot of videos. You reality. That's right. You like reality. Reality. Like I love all the housewives below decks, like all of those. Just because as I'm trying to unwind from the day, I just watch and for me it's like mindless tv.
[00:34:50] Marisa Barrett: Yes, and it is comical, however. It's been getting kind of mean. Some of the housewives, I'm like, that's a little too [00:35:00] mean girl. And like, if you and I are hanging out and you're being ugly to me every time, I'm probably not gonna hang out with you anymore. But these women, it's almost like encouraged. And they like encouraged because they're paid for a show.
[00:35:16] Marisa Barrett: But it used to be fun to watch, like they used to kind of get along and they'd have a little bit of like drama. But now I'm like watching it and I'm finding myself like heart rate's elevating and I'm like getting all irritated. I'm like, I've better like quit watching this. That's how I feel with the zombie show.
[00:35:33] Marisa Barrett: Oh, there is some shows that I do
[00:35:34] Gloria Watson: that too, where you're like, but so I normally don't watch. Like that's the scariest thing and it doesn't seem scary to me 'cause it's like a, you know, make Yeah, well no, it's like a natural process rather than like back from the dead. Like it not a spiritual thing. Well let's ask to the doctor
[00:35:50] Marisa Barrett: next week if like, skin turns us into a mummy.
[00:35:56] Gloria Watson: But I usually like funny shows, Uhhuh and one of my favorite [00:36:00] shows that I watch. In the past, have you seen Resident Alien?
[00:36:03] Marisa Barrett: No. I didn't know you were such a, like a
[00:36:06] Gloria Watson: zombie alien lover. Yeah, it's hilarious. I'm learning a lot about, yeah, it
[00:36:10] Marisa Barrett: explains
[00:36:10] Gloria Watson: a lot. It's the best, the resident alien. It's about an alien that comes, uh, and he takes over.
[00:36:17] Gloria Watson: He can look like anybody. He just needs a little bit of DNA. But it is the funniest show and I can't wait for the next season. But I like, I love mindless tv like Tacoma pd. Mm-hmm. And I love watching shows that I've seen in the past and then letting them play. 'cause it still make me laugh.
[00:36:34] Marisa Barrett: Yeah. And you, yeah, I feel like that would like Seinfeld friends, actually, even the Golden Girls.
[00:36:40] Marisa Barrett: I love the Golden Girls. Like my friend, uh, sent me a thing on Instagram and she was. The golden girls were talking about, like if you lay flat on your back, it looks like you had a facelift. And then, um, the, I don't remember all their names, so that's terrible, but I do. Is it, it's like Blanche. Blanche, [00:37:00] Doris
[00:37:00] Gloria Watson: Rose.
[00:37:01] Marisa Barrett: Rose Doris is Rose's daughter. Right.
[00:37:04] Gloria Watson: He, yes.
[00:37:06] Marisa Barrett: Yeah. So Doris is telling Blanche and Rose is sitting there and she's like, I thought you were always on your back to Blanche. And like then Doris is like, yeah, and then something else falls to the back too. And she was talking about this and I was just dying laughing and I'm like.
[00:37:21] Marisa Barrett: I was a little kid watching that show, not having a clue what they're talking clue about. Clue. But now as an adult, you are dying laughing. Yeah. And the crazy thing is, is back then they were like our age and they looked not our age. So say that. Think about you. But I, I do like watching old funny. I would rather watch light stuff that like you leave and you're feeling like happy.
[00:37:47] Marisa Barrett: Exactly. And not like all like pissed off at someone you don't even know. Yeah. You know? So one
[00:37:52] Gloria Watson: of my favorite shows that I watch with my oldest daughter, uh, we had a summer where it was just her and I, um, and we [00:38:00] watched Gilmore Girls. Mm-hmm. And we watched the whole thing. Have you ever seen that?
[00:38:03] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm.
[00:38:04] Marisa Barrett: I didn't. Like, there was so many years when my boys, my boys were probably babies. When you girls were like teenagers, right. Hmm. Yeah, maybe. Yeah. But we were, like I, back then I didn't watch hardly any TV because we were always like in the gym or at the, um, baseball field, football field. That's true. So it's like I didn't ever watch TV at all.
[00:38:27] Marisa Barrett: I watch more TV now 'cause I have more free time, I guess. Yeah. But, um, I didn't watch any of those like. One of my new favorite shows that I just binge watched though was Suits every Season. Oh, yeah.
[00:38:41] Gloria Watson: That I just watched. That was
[00:38:43] Marisa Barrett: excellent.
[00:38:43] Gloria Watson: I loved it. Yeah. I started watching that in 2019 and I stopped because I was depressed.
[00:38:48] Gloria Watson: I couldn't finish law school. Yeah.
[00:38:51] Marisa Barrett: And then I did just watch Ozark. Have you seen that? I've seen a part of it. I've seen a couple. It's dark.
[00:38:57] Gloria Watson: Yeah. And I didn't like it. Mm-hmm. I think I [00:39:00] watched the first episode and I couldn't follow through. Mm-hmm. Um, because of how mm-hmm. Like. I just can't, it's almost like you get into this mind frame and you're trying, and I get anxious with those shows.
[00:39:10] Gloria Watson: Yeah, me too. Because it's, I'm trying to figure out how to fix this stuff and what if it was, you know? Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So I just can't. Mm-hmm. I need a feel good.
[00:39:18] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm.
[00:39:18] Gloria Watson: And I'm okay. I'm one of those people that if I watch a TV show or a TA movie, I need to know the ending.
[00:39:23] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm. Me
[00:39:24] Gloria Watson: too. And decide if it's worth to watch.
[00:39:25] Gloria Watson: That's why I
[00:39:26] Marisa Barrett: watched the whole, I watched the whole series and I'm like, you, I watched the first episode and I'm like. Anxiety up to here going, oh my gosh, are people really doing this stuff? This is dark. And then I'm like, well, now I wanna see like the whole, so I went ahead and watched four seasons.
[00:39:41] Gloria Watson: Four of both Arc?
[00:39:42] Gloria Watson: Yes.
[00:39:43] Marisa Barrett: How did you get in? You really wanna know? Yeah. Um, if you don't wanna know, they get away with money laundering and murder. I don't even remember how. And then they end up wealthy.
[00:39:55] Gloria Watson: Really? Mm-hmm. Can we try And
[00:39:56] Marisa Barrett: everybody in the show gets murdered, but then, huh? [00:40:00] So, I'm sorry if I blew it for you. If you were to plan on watching it, if you
[00:40:03] Gloria Watson: Yeah, we'll put a, a disclaimer, we'll disclaimer before you get to the end.
[00:40:08] Gloria Watson: Mm-hmm. Yeah. If you wanna watch, we'll start. Don't watch this topic.
[00:40:13] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm.
[00:40:14] Gloria Watson: Well, I think that's our topic for today. We would love to hear what kind of shows you recommend because she can see ours are pretty boring. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And I'm at the last episode of the Last of us, and I can't wait for the next one, but.
[00:40:28] Gloria Watson: I do need a new show because I like to binge watch.
[00:40:31] Marisa Barrett: Mm-hmm. Yeah. I would love some new shows too. Feel good shows. Yeah.
[00:40:36] Gloria Watson: Not zombie shows. Apparently. For not Zombie
[00:40:39] Marisa Barrett: and not alien shows. Like I'm pretty, yes. You need
[00:40:41] Gloria Watson: to watch The Alien one. I don't like, it's not any scary. It's not scary. It's hilarious. You need to watch it.
[00:40:48] Gloria Watson: I, that's probably my favorite show from last year. Hmm.
[00:40:52] Marisa Barrett: Okay.
[00:40:52] Gloria Watson: Yep. All right guys. Thanks guys. Have a good
[00:40:55] Marisa Barrett: week.
[00:40:56] Gloria Watson: Bye guys. Yeah, I am afraid of that. You should [00:41:00] watch, just watch, um, um, a trailer.
